Janet Howell, the incumbent Democrat, generally supports liberal causes.  She supports abortion rights, supports the gay legislative agenda, and promises to continue voting against sodomy laws.  She is endorsed by the Virginia Partisans Gay & Lesbian Democratic Club and Equality Virginia (gay & lesbian).  She voted against repeal of the “death tax.”  She supported passage of the 2002 Sales Tax Referendum, which was soundly defeated by voters. She opposes school choice.  She voted against parental consent before a minor’s abortion, against a ban on partial birth abortion, against authorizing our national motto “In God We Trust” in public buildings, and against informing parents when their child receives medical attention by state employees.  Sen. Howell scored 4 pts above the lowest pro-family score in the Virginia Senate, based on her voting record (see Ratings below).

Dave Hunt, the Republican challenger, is regarded as moderately conservative.  He has pledged not to raise taxes.  He opposes increasing the Dulles Toll Road fee, and favors increasing the percent of the budget for critical transportation needs,  He is pro-life, favors parental consent before a minor’s abortion, and a ban on partial birth abortions.  He favors school choice, including home schooling.  Hunt opposes the gay agenda, and opposes dispensing “morning after” pills to minors in school w/o parental consent.  He favors limiting the rate of growth of spending to inflation plus population growth, and limiting the rate of growth in property taxes.
