All the Prince William County precincts are new to this district.  Both candidates have very low name recognition to these voters.

Toddy Puller, the incumbent Democrat, has a solid reputation for supporting liberal causes.  She supports abortion rights, supports the gay legislative agenda, and is endorsed by the Virginia Partisans Gay & Lesbian Democratic Club.  She voted against the car tax cut, and switched her vote, at Gov. Warner’s request, to vote against repeal of the “death tax.”  Puller supported passage of the 2002 Sales Tax Referendum, which was soundly defeated by voters. She opposes school choice.  She voted against parental notification, against a ban on partial birth abortion, against authorizing our national motto “In God We Trust” in public buildings, and against a ban on harvesting human embryos for stem cell research.  Sen. Puller tied Sen. Mary Margaret Whipple (Arlington) for the second lowest pro-family score in the Virginia Senate, based on her voting record (see Ratings below).  She has not returned her Issues Survey response.

Chris Braunlich, the Republican challenger, earned a reputation on the Fairfax County School Board  as a strong advocate for intensive phonics and school choice.  He pledges to vote against tax increases.  He favors death tax repeal, limiting growth of spending to inflation plus population growth, 2nd Amendment rights, parental consent before a minor’s abortion, reducing the family tax burden, and revenue-neutral revisions to the Tax Code. He opposes the gay legislative agenda and taxpayer funding of abortions.  He is generally regarded as a fiscal conservative and moderate social conservative.  (See his Issues Survey response for more details.)
